Cowboys’ Season in Free-Fall
Sunday, November 14th, 2010 by brad in Blog, NewsShortly before Christmas of 2004 the Cowboys were victorious at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, pulling an upset of the UCLA Bruins live in front of an ESPN audience, led by Corey Bramlet. Six years later the Cowboys were at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas trying to salvage a football season and build for next year. The Cowboys, who were eliminated from bowl contention, were playing for pride and the seniors at this point. The Cowboys were looking to win a football game a week after being humiliated by a loss to New Mexico. The Pokes came out with fire to start the game, with Alvester Alexander running 76 yards for a Cowboy touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. The Cowboys followed the touchdown up with an onside kick attempt, a play that worked a week earlier at New Mexico. The Rebels recovered and the momentum swung to UNLV for the remainder of the game. The Cowboy defense had trouble slowing up Rebel running back Tim Cornett who rushed for four touchdowns, and Rebel quarterback Omar Clayton who tossed three scores. The Rebels marched up and down the field with drives that kept the Cowboy defense on the field. The Rebels also converted three fourth down attempts. A scary moment at the end of the game came when Cowboy running back Robert Herron landed awkwardly on a UNLV defender making the tackle and was carted off of the football field by ambulance and taken to a local hospital. He was released today and has made the trip back to Laramie. Final score was Rebels 42, Wyoming 16.
Next week is the Border War in Laramie. The Cowboys and Rams will meet up for the 101st time. The Bronze Boot will be on the line, which is currently in Wyoming’s possession. The Cowboys won last year in Fort Collins 17-16. The Rams are 3-8 on the season.

Pokes Fall to New Mexico
Monday, November 8th, 2010 by brad in Blog, NewsThe unthinkable happened. Wyoming showed up in Albuquerque 11 months after they started the Capital One bowl season with one of the most memorable bowl games of the 2009 season. The defense led by seniors John Fletcher and Mitch Unrein stood up NCAA rushing leader Ryan Matthews on the 1 yard line to seal a double overtime victory over Fresno State. Eleven months later the Cowboys were looking to stop the bleeding on a hemorrhaging season against a winless New Mexico Lobos football team. The Lobos were ripe for the picking as they were starting a new QB this game, Stump Godfrey, who was making his first start for the Lobos. Godfrey proved to be the Cowboy killer as he engineered numerous 3rd down conversions to spark the Lobos to victory on a last second field goal. The Cowboys had their opportunities in this game as they were within scoring range on three different drives and turned the ball over inside of New Mexico territory three times. Two came from freshman running back Robert Herron, and one from Austyn Carta-Samuels. ACS also fumbled the football on a sack, which gave New Mexico the ball on the Cowboy 15 yard line to setup another Lobo score. Execution was the name of the game in this one. On a lighter note, the Cowboys piled up over 500 yards of total offense, which featured three different ball carriers gaining over 100 yards rushing, ACS, Herron, and Alvester Alexander. The spread offense looked like a legitimate offense in this game, but was beaten by its own mistakes.
The Pokes will look to rebound this week against UNLV, who has had its own share of trouble this year under first year head coach Bobby Hauck, who came to the Rebels from Montana after a successful run with the Grizzlies. The Rebels are giving up 39 points a game on the season. Their only win has come against New Mexico. The game is slated to start at 8:00pm from Sam Boyd Stadium.
