Cowgirls continue to roll, Wrestlers win in Reno

Monday, December 27th, 2010 by brad in Blog, News

The Wyoming Cowgirls continue rolling their competition. The Cowgirls are led by senior Hilary Carlson who was awarded with the MWC women’s player of the week with her performances vs. Montana and Utah State. The Cowgirls started the week in Montana to take on the Lady Griz. The Cowgirls have never won in Missoula. Led by Carlson and fellow senior Aubrey Vandiver the Cowgirls made sure that wasn’t going to happen again. They dominated from the tip-off, eventually beating the Lady Griz at Dahlberg Arena. Carson had 23 points and 8 boards while Vandiver helped with 22 points and 9 boards. The Cowgirls followed that up a beating of Utah State in Logan, UT  81-51. The Cowgirls will next play Montana-Western in an exhibition in Rock Springs on Dec 30th.

The Cowboy wrestlers turned in their best performance of the season to date as they competed in the Reno Tournament of Champions. Led by Shane Onufer and Joe LeBlanc the Cowboys cruised to first place. Onufer won the 165 pound bracket and was named most outstanding wrestler, as well as WWC wrestler of the week. The Pokes beat Boise State by 1.5 points. Onufer posted a 6-0 record on his way to first place. Senior Cole Dallaserra finished in 2nd place, losing to the #2 ranked Jason Chamberlain of Boise State. Redshirt freshman and Wyoming native Tyler Cox finished in 3rd place. The Cowboys will be back in action after the new year in Virginia for the Virginia Duals.

The Cowboy basketball team has been winning as of late with wins over Western State and Centenary, as well as Denver, but had a disappointing home loss to Wisconsin-Green Bay, a team from the CBI tournament last year. The Cowboys will next be in action tomorrow night as they take on Kennesaw State in the AA.

Cowgirls dominate, Cowboys dominated

Sunday, December 12th, 2010 by brad in Blog, News

The Wyoming Cowgirls insist that they continue their winning ways, and they did so in a big way this week by dominating the Westminster Griffins. The Griffins from Utah were outmatched by the Cowgirls. Senior Hilary Carlson led the way for the Cowgirls as she piled in 29 points for the 6-2 Cowgirls. Following here were Aubrey Vandiver with 16 points and Jade Kennedy with 12 points. The Cowgirls will play Wednesday night in the AA against Wisconsin, who the Cowgirls defeated for the 2007 WNIT championship. The game will start at 7pm.

The Wyoming Cowboy basketball team went in the opposite direction as the Cowgirls as they were beaten by the UC-Irvine Anteaters 83-68. The Anteaters completed a sweep of the UW basketball teams as both squads defeated the Cowboys and Cowgirls. The Pokes were led in scoring by Francisco Cruz who had 14 points. Next in scoring was Djibril Thiam, who had 12 points for the Cowboys. The Pokes will next face Denver on Tuesday in the AA with a start time of 7pm.

The Cowboy wrestlers will be in action this week as they take on Oregon State at Erickson Thunderbird Gym in Casper.

The Cowboy football team got a handful of recruit verbal commitments today as well. They picked up 5 new players, two via the JUCO route. The Cowboys picked up a verbal from OL Zach Rushing from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, quarterback Brett Smith of Salem, OR, WR Dominic Rufran of Colorado Springs, Rafe Keily of Wheaton, IL, safety Luke Anderson of Blinn College, and the gem of the group, Adam Pittser of Richmond, IL. The Cowboys are quickly piling up recruits as they have 25 spots to fill this season. Pittser and Smith are the two QB recruits of this class. UW desperately needs help on the OL and defensive line, and it appears the coaching staff is hitting those positions hard. Signing day is February 3rd.

Basketball teams win, Wrestling loses nailbiter

Sunday, December 5th, 2010 by brad in Blog, News

The Wyoming Cowboy basketball team started the week on a pretty low note. The men’s team has been struggling the last few weeks after a disappointing showing in Cancun. On Wednesday the unthinkable happened. The Pokes, who were favored, lost to a division II transitioning team, South Dakota in Vermillion. The Pokes dropped the contest 80-70 in the Dakota Dome, which also doubles as the Coyotes’ football stadium. The Pokes were feeling pretty down after that contest, but they chose to redeem themselves this weekend as they totally dismantled Indiana State in the AA, 81-51, thus helping the MWC win the annual MWC/MVC challenge. Leading the way for the Pokes were Desmar Jackson and Jaydee Luster, who scored a career high 15 points. The Pokes will next play at UC-Irvine on Friday night.
The Wyoming Cowgirls are coming off of a holiday tournament win in Mexico. Their next stop was a date with UC-Irvine. The Cowgirls suffered a bit of a let down as they lost to the Anteaters 65-53. The Cowgirls, like the Cowboys, would go on to rebound over the weekend. Kicking off Saturday’s UW Sports Extravaganza the Cowgirls found a way to pummel the Idaho Vandals in the AA. The Cowgirls took the contest 68-55. Leading the way for the Cowgirls was Chaundra Sewell, making her first career start, who scored 23 points and 8 rebounds. Aubrey Vandiver scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds as well. Up next for the Cowgirls is Westminster on Saturday.
The Cowboy wrestlers went into their first dual of the year against the Nebraska Cornhuskers with high expectations. Last year the Cowboys beat the Huskers in Lincoln. The Pokes were looking to build on that momentum and defeat one of the nations top perennial teams. The Pokes got down early in the dual losing their first two matches. Newcomer, redshirt freshman Tyler Cox of Gillette, got the Pokes on the board by winning the 125 pound match for his seventh win of the season. Nebraska scored an upset when Ridge Kiley got a win over Wyoming’s Michael Martinez, who is currently ranked 16th. Cole Dallaserra kept his winning ways alive with a win, as did Shane Onufer. The Huskers were able to put the dual out of reach after that. The Pokes finished the dual with a win from #2 Joe LeBlanc, who’s fresh off of an offseason surgery. LeBlanc scored a win in overtime with a quick takedown of #10 Josh Ihnen. The Pokes will be on the mat on Dec. 16 in Casper at Erickson Thunderbird Gym vs. Oregon State.
The Mountain West will be well represented in the bowls this year as TCU, Utah, BYU, Air Force, and San Diego State all received bowl bids. TCU will play Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl. Utah will play future MWC member Boise State in Las Vegas. BYU will face off with UTEP in the New Mexico Bowl. Air Force will play Georgia Tech in the Independence Bowl, and San Diego State will play Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl. Also representing are future MWC members Nevada and Fresno State. Nevada will play Boston College in San Francisco, and Fresno State will play Northern Illinois in the Humanitarian Bowl.
