The first day of the Mountain West media day has come to a close and what a day it was. The media days in Vegas started out with a Cowboy victory as the Pokes, paired up with UNLV, won the annual bowling competition. TCU’s Tank Carder won the individual high score, while the Pokes and Rebels won the team trophy. As the first day in Las Vegas comes to a close there was a lot to look back on. Following the numerous media people attending the event the Twitterverse was alive with commentary from the different MW schools. Wyoming’s Robert Gagliardi and Eric Schmoldt had great updates all day. To start the day, the Cowboys were picked to finish 6th in the Mountain West. Boise State was nearly unanimous, gaining 28/31 votes, TCU second with 3 votes, followed by Air Force, San Diego State, Colorado State, Wyoming, UNLV, and New Mexico. Cowboy DE Josh Biezuns was named a preseason 1st team MWC today as well.
The Cowboys hit the podium shortly after that. Taking the stage was Dave Christensen, Josh Biezuns, and Brian Hendricks. The first question to come up was about Wyoming’s new uniforms, 9 new combinations. Hendricks answered the question with, “Uniforms don’t win games.” Dave Christensen commented that the team is deeper and has more players in the system to run a true spread offense. As far as naming a starting quarterback, the coach mentioned that he has seen one QB practice 15 times and has not seen the other. It will be a wide open competition and if it’s close, he’ll play both of them. The Pokes will have four scrimmages during fall camp to get a better read on the position battles. The offense got a boost from Brian Hendricks, as he mentioned that they should be fine from what he has witnessed. Christensen said that there will be more live tackling in camp this year than previous years. The Pokes had an awful time with missed tackles last year and the added depth will help with being able to practice that more. Biezuns noted his proudest moment as a Cowboy was winning at CSU in 2009, while Hendricks said his was winning the New Mexico Bowl in 2009.
In other MW media day news Boise State’s Kellen Moore was named MW preseason offensive player of the year, TCUs Tank Carder was named MW preseason defensive player of the year, and Air Force’s Jared Warzeka was named MW preseason special teams player of the year. Boise State revealed that they will not be able to wear their all blue uniforms at home during conference play. TheMTN’s cameras would probably explode if they were allowed to. A writer from Lindy’s magazine commented that the Mountain West may have the best senior linebackers in the nation.
In other Pokes news, former Cowboy Marcell Gipson was signed today by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent
