Less than one week to kickoff

Sunday, August 28th, 2011 by brad in Blog, News

The 2011 football season is almost upon us with games starting on Thursday for some teams. The hometown Wyoming Cowboys will be in action against FCS opponent Weber State from the Big Sky Conference. The Cowboys and Wildcats met two years ago in Laramie where the Cowboys prevailed 29-22 in a contest that wasn’t as close as the score indicated. The look of these two teams is considerably different this time around with a lot of turnover from graduations and attrition for both teams. Weber State is predicted 5th in the Big Sky. The game will kickoff at 7:00pm, and following the game will be a fireworks show. The Cowboys will be wearing the uniform that the fans choose, which will be unveiled this week. The Cowboys have 9 different uniform options to pick from this year, as Nike produced a new line of  uniforms for the Pokes. A new uniform combination will feature an all brown set, including a matte brown helmet with a brown bucking horse in a white outline.

True freshman Brett Smith has been announced as the starting quarterback against Weber State. Smith had a great fall camp, as well as getting familiar with the playbook during spring drills, to beat out freshman Adam Pittser and JC transfer Colby Kirkegaard. Smith is from West Salem, Oregon.

Mountain West Football Media Day 1

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011 by brad in Blog, News

The first day of the Mountain West media day has come to a close and what a day it was. The media days in Vegas started out with a Cowboy victory as the Pokes, paired up with UNLV, won the annual bowling competition. TCU’s Tank Carder won the individual high score, while the Pokes and Rebels won the team trophy. As the first day in Las Vegas comes to a close there was a lot to look back on. Following the numerous media people attending the event the Twitterverse was alive with commentary from the different MW schools. Wyoming’s Robert Gagliardi and Eric Schmoldt had great updates all day. To start the day, the Cowboys were picked to finish 6th in the Mountain West. Boise State was nearly unanimous, gaining 28/31 votes, TCU second with 3 votes, followed by Air Force, San Diego State, Colorado State, Wyoming, UNLV, and New Mexico. Cowboy DE Josh Biezuns was named a preseason 1st team MWC today as well.
The Cowboys hit the podium shortly after that. Taking the stage was Dave Christensen, Josh Biezuns, and Brian Hendricks. The first question to come up was about Wyoming’s new uniforms, 9 new combinations. Hendricks answered the question with, “Uniforms don’t win games.” Dave Christensen commented that the team is deeper and has more players in the system to run a true spread offense. As far as naming a starting quarterback, the coach mentioned that he has seen one QB practice 15 times and has not seen the other. It will be a wide open competition and if it’s close, he’ll play both of them. The Pokes will have four scrimmages during fall camp to get a better read on the position battles. The offense got a boost from Brian Hendricks, as he mentioned that they should be fine from what he has witnessed. Christensen said that there will be more live tackling in camp this year than previous years. The Pokes had an awful time with missed tackles last year and the added depth will help with being able to practice that more. Biezuns noted his proudest moment as a Cowboy was winning at CSU in 2009, while Hendricks said his was winning the New Mexico Bowl in 2009.
In other MW media day news Boise State’s Kellen Moore was named MW preseason offensive player of the year, TCUs Tank Carder was named MW preseason defensive player of the year, and Air Force’s Jared Warzeka was named MW preseason special teams player of the year. Boise State revealed that they will not be able to wear their all blue uniforms at home during conference play. TheMTN’s cameras would probably explode if they were allowed to. A writer from Lindy’s magazine commented that the Mountain West may have the best senior linebackers in the nation.
In other Pokes news, former Cowboy Marcell Gipson was signed today by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent

Summer recap of 2010/11 athletics season

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011 by brad in Blog, News

The 2010/11 Wyoming athletics season has come to an end and we’re all patiently waiting for the 2011 sports season to start. This time of year seems to drag on forever. The past Wyoming sports season was full of ups and downs for the Cowboys and Cowgirls. After Dave Christensen started his first year at UW with a 7-6 record and a New Mexico Bowl victory hopes were high for the Cowboys. A couple of painful losses, including the tragic death of freshman linebacker Rueben Narcisse, and the Cowboys quickly found themselves at the bottom of the Mountain West standings. The Cowboys finished 3-9, but ended the regular season on a high note as they kept the Bronze Boot in Laramie with a 44-0 thrashing of Colorado State. After the season concluded Austyn Carta-Samuels announced that he would not be returning to the Cowboys, leaving a big hole for the Pokes to fill at the quarterback position. In other changes, OC Marcus Arroyo left UW for a job at UC-Berkeley and was replaced by former Bowling Green coach Gregg Brandon.

The Cowboy basketball team was looking to rebound from a poor previous season after finishing with three conference wins, but had a hard time getting it going. Early on in the season the Pokes lost Afam Moujeke to injury and the season got progressively worse from there. At the end of the season the Cowboys finished with a 10-21 record, second worst in the Mountain West. The finish cost Heath Schroyer his job. A few weeks after the conclusion of the season, and after an extensive interview process, the Cowboys decided on former coach Larry Schyatt to lead the way in 2011. Schyatt had a previous stint in Laramie where he coached for one season then left for Clemson. He comes to Laramie from the University of Florida where he coached under Billy Donovan.

Larry Shyatt Returns to Wyoming

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011 by brad in Blog, News

The Wyoming Cowboy basketball team has a new head coach. Seven weeks after Heath Schroyer was fired from UW, the Cowboys landed on their top choice, Larry Shyatt, who comes back to Wyoming from the University of Florida where he was an assistant head coach under Billy Donovan. With the Gators Shyatt won two NCAA championships and made several NCAA tournament appearances, including this past season where the Gators were a Elite 8 team. Shyatt was previously with the Cowboys during the 1997-1998 season when he led the Cowboys to a 19-9 record, then left after one season to pursue his “dream job” at Clemson. Shyatt now feels he has unfinished business at UW. He will return to Wyoming with his son, Jeremy, who was an assistant coach at North Florida. Joining the Shyatt’s is UCLA assistant coach Scott Duncan who worked with Shyatt at Clemson and is known to be a great recruiter. The University of Wyoming will hold a press conference and introduction of the new coach April 6 in the Wildcatter Suites at 5:30pm.

In other UW sports news, the Wyoming Cowboy wrestlers brought home two All-American wrestlers in Joe LeBlanc and Shane Onufer. Onufer won 5th place at the NCAA Championships. LeBlanc, now a three time all-American, brought home 6th place as he was forced to forfeit after missing weight Saturday morning, forfeiting his matches as well as all team points he had accumulated. Before the forfeit the Cowboys were poised to finish in the top 15 in the tournament, but with the loss of the points the Cowboys finished in the top 30.

Wyoming Cowboy swimming has an all-American on their plate as Cowboy diver Mark Murdock was named honorable mention all-American for his 12th place finish at the NCAA championships.

The Cowgirl basketball team concluded their season as well with a flurry of activity in the WNIT. The Cowgirls started the tournament with a convincing win over Portland State. They then faced a bit tougher competition with the Oklahoma State Cowgirls came to town and the game came down to the wire as the Cowgirls pulled of a four point win against the other Cowgirls. The WNIT tournament wrapped up for the Cowgirls with a loss at home to Colorado’s Lady Buffs. The Cowgirls will lose four seniors, Jade Kennedy, Aubrey Vandiver, Randi Richardson, and Cheyenne’s Hilary Carlson. Head coach Joe Legerski concluded the game by getting on the mic and thanking the thousands of fans in attendance for making the season great.

The Cowboy football team held their second scrimmage of the spring camp this past weekend. The defense prevailed over the offense in this last one by a wide margin. Linebacker Brian Hendricks said the defense was good, but they have a long ways to go before they will be great. The battle to watch this spring is between quarterback Emory Miller Jr and Brett Smith. The quarterbacks split reps with the #1 offense. Smith is a true freshman who enrolled early to get extra reps with the team. They will be joined this summer by Adam Pittser and all three will  battle to replace Austyn Carta-Samuels as the starter.

Cowboy Wrestlers Win WWC Championship

Monday, March 7th, 2011 by brad in Blog, News

The Cowboy wrestling team has won the Western Wrestling Conference for a second consecutive year. On Sunday in Colorado Springs the Cowboys rolled in looking to avenge their dual loss to Northern Iowa two weeks ago, when the Panthers stole a close dual victory away from the Pokes and claimed the WWC regular season title. The Cowboys hit the Panthers where it hurt, by beating them in the finals of the WWC tournament. The Cowboys are sending six wrestlers to the NCAA tournament in Philadelphia, the most since 2005-06. Advancing for the Cowboys were Michael Martinez, Cole Dallaserra, Shane Onufer, Patrick Martinez, Joe LeBlanc, and LJ Helbig. LeBlanc did not win his weight class at the WWC, as he was defeated 4-3 in his finals match, but will advance to the tournament as a wild card. LeBlanc won his true second match in dominating fashion 13-4. The only other Cowboy to lose in the finals was HWT Andy McLaughlin, who was defeated 3-1. The Cowboys won the WWC tournament by six points, clinching the tournament on Patrick Martinez’s win. The Cowboys will be well represented in Philadelphia in two weeks and are looking to improve over their 33rd place finish last season in which LeBlanc was the only All-American on the team. The tournament will begin March 17th.

In basketball news the MWC released their awards today. Aubrey Vandiver of the Cowgirl basketball team was named the MWC women’s player of the year today, something a Cowgirl hasn’t done in MWC history. Vandiver was also named to the 1st All-Mountain West team, along with teammate Hilary Carlson. Jade Kennedy and Chaundra Sewell were named as Honorable Mention. On the men’s side Amath M’Baye and Desmar Jackson were named to the Honorable Mention team.

The Cowboy basketball team will play TCU in the pig tail game of the MWC tournament on Wednesday, the winner of that game will play #1 seed BYU on Thursday. The Cowgirls will have a first around bye as the #3 seed and will face the winner of San Diego State and New Mexico on Wednesday. The games will be hosted at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Pokes B-Ball Wins, Wrestlers fall in Oklahoma

Sunday, February 13th, 2011 by brad in Blog, News

The Cowboy basketball team is finally showing some signs of life. After the University fired Heath Schroyer one week ago the Pokes have started to show some signs of playing like a basketball team. On Wednesday the Pokes lost to New Mexico in the infamous Pit in Albuquerque. Amath M’Baye scored a career high of 19 points in the 11 point loss to New Mexico. On Saturday the Pokes cleared a hurdle in the healing process when they slammed the hapless TCU Horned Frogs. Led my Amath M’Baye he again topped his career point total with 21, while Desmar Jackson added 15 and Paco Cruz added 12. The Cowboys will try to keep the momentum going when they head to Salt Lake City to take on the Utes, in what might be the final time the Cowboys and Utes ever face each other, as the Utes are headed to the Pac12.

The Cowgirl basketball team had an up and down week. They started the week by completing the season series sweep of the New Mexico Lobos in Laramie, then ran into a problem when they were swept for the season by TCU in Fort Worth. Aubrey Vandiver led the way vs. New Mexico with 28 points and 10 rebounds, while Jade Kennedy turned in a career high in points with 23. Hilary Carlson added another 15 points. The Cowgirls wouldn’t be so lucky against TCU as the Lady Frogs kept on rolling in MWC play. The Cowgirls will next play at home vs. Utah on Wednesday.

The Cowboy wrestlers had a tough week as they traveled to Oklahoma to take on two of the top programs in the country. On Friday night they faced off against the 8th ranked Oklahoma Sooners in Norman. The Pokes started out on a high note with Joe LeBlanc and LJ Helbig securing wins to start the dual, but the Pokes only won one other match after that, a win for Michael Martinez at 125 pounds. The Sooners overwhelmed the Cowboys, with Tyler Cox, Cole Dallaserra both losing, and losing his first match of the year and 25 match winning streak snapped was Shane Onufer. On Sunday the Cowboys didn’t fare any better against the #4 Oklahoma State Cowboys in Stillwater. The lone win for the Cowboys came from #5 Joe LeBlanc. The Pokes were shutout from there. The Cowboy wrestlers will next take on Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, where the Pokes will look to go undefeated in WWC duals for the second season in a row.

The Cowboy basketball coaching search is still underway. No candidate has emerged as the top choice for the head coaching job, but the Casper Star Tribune published a list of candidate who would make sense at UW. Check out the list on the Casper Star Tribune website.

The Cowboy football team announced a couple of coaching moves as well. Offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo is leaving the Pokes for Berkeley and he will assume the QB coaches role for the Cal Bears. Replacing him with be Gregg Brandon, the former head coach of Bowling Green, after Urban Meyer left, and most recently the offensive coordinator for Virginia. Also coming to the Cowboy coaching staff is Danilo Robinson, who will take over the defensive line after Jerry Montgomery left for Indiana. Brandon coached at Wyoming under Paul Roach in the late 80s during what is considered some of Wyoming’s greatest years in football.

Wyoming fires Heath Schroyer

Monday, February 7th, 2011 by brad in Blog, News

The University of Wyoming on Monday has decided to fire men’s basketball head coach Heath Schroyer. The move comes after a season full of injuries and losses for the Cowboys. Athletic Director Tom Burman decided to fire Schroyer, despite repeating numerous times that no decision would be made about the future of Schroyer until after the season was over. Burman was quoted as saying, “I regret having to make this decision to terminate Heath’s contract at this time, but I feel it is in the best interest of our program.” The Cowboys have struggled this season compiling a 8-15 mark, 1-8 in conference play. The Cowboys had shown signs of life the last couple of weeks with narrow losses to BYU and Colorado State, but that wasn’t enough to save Schroyer’s job. Schroyer compiled a 49-68 record during the course of his Cowboy career, while going 16-41 in Mountain West Conference play. Despite the losing record on the court, Schroyer was credited with turning around the Cowboys in the classroom by achieving very high marks in the APR. The Cowboys are expected to begin a national search immediately for a new head coach. The two names that are rumored to be at the top of the list at this moment are BYU assistant coach Dave Rice and South Florida assistant coach Jeremy Cox.

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011 by brad in Blog, News

The Cowboy wrestlers are continuing their dominance on the mat in a big way. The Cowboys opened their Western Wrestling Conference opener against Utah Valley State in Orem, Utah. The Cowboys got the dual started with a win from Jimmy Belleville, the continued winning with a decision from currently undefeated #6 Shane Onufer. The Pokes suffered a loss from Patrick Martinez, but got back on track with a pin from Joe LeBlanc. LeBlanc now has six pins on the year and is currently ranked #5 by Intermat. They will next face the xDSU schools next weekend as they take on South Dakota State Friday night, and North Dakota State on Sunday afternoon.

The Cowgirls dominated from the get-go and beat the Redhawks 70-51. Three Cowgirls finished in double digit scoring, including Hilary Carlson who dumped in 20 points, Aubrey Vandiver who added 15, and Chaundra Sewell who added 11. The Cowgirls followed up that performance with a 42 point win over Air Force on Saturday where the Cowgirls had 9 of 10 players get into the scoring. Carlson had 27 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks, followed by Jade Kennedy who had 15 points and 7 rebounds, and Chaundra Sewell adding 13 points. The Cowgirls shot 60% from the field and 70% from the charity stripe. This week the Cowgirls will be at UNLV and at home vs. San Diego State.

The Cowboy basketball team continued to struggle. This week they fell to Air Force 72-51 in Colorado Springs. The Pokes are dealing with injuries. Afam Moujeke has been lost for the season, as he was not able to completely recover from knee surgery this past offseason. The Cowboys were led in scoring by Amath M’Baye who had 13 points, and Paco Cruz added another 10. The Cowboys were 4 of 23 from 3 point land. The Cowboys will next take on UNLV at home, then at San Diego State this weekend.

The Pokes football team picked up their 23rd recruit today as they got a verbal from Kevin Robertson, a 6’4″ WR from Houston, Texas. The Pokes are closing in on the end of the recruiting season. Keep an eye on the forum with the latest on the recruits coming in.

Austyn Carta-Samuels leaving Wyoming

Monday, January 10th, 2011 by brad in Blog, News

Just announced news from the UW Athletic dept and head coach Dave Christensen, sophomore quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels will be leaving the University of Wyoming for personal reasons. The reasons for ACS transferring are not known at this time, but he appears that the former MWC Freshman of the Year will be heading to a JUCO school. ACS informed coach Dave Christensen of his decision Monday, the day 2nd semester classes started at UW. ACS was the face of the UW program under Christensen and was confirmed early in the winter that ACS would be back for the Pokes in ’11. This move comes at the heels of the Cowboys losing starting safety Shamiel Gary, starting kicker Ian Watts, and wide receiver David Tooley last week.

The Cowboys will rely on a group of four quarterbacks going into next season, none of played a regular season game for the Cowboys. There are two redshirt QBs, Sam Stratton and Emory Miller Jr, and two verbal commits for the Pokes this year, Brett Smith, who has already enrolled at UW and is currently on campus, and Adam Pittser. The Pokes will begin the year with two FCS teams, which should help the new QBs transition into the role of starting quarterback.

Dave Christensen released a statement saying, “While it is disappointing to our team and Wyoming fans that Austyn has made this decision, if you are in this business long enough as a coach you face situations where young men choose to transfer.  We wish Austyn the best in his future.”  The news story broke when Eric Schmoldt from the Casper Star Tribune was on a phone call with ACS, who confirmed his plans to leave, then an email from ACS was sent to Schmoldt and Wyoming Tribune Eagle writer Robert Gagliardi informing them of his decision to leave UW. The MTN.TV collected this snippet from ACS “”I’m very appreciative of my time here in Laramie. Everyone has been very supportive since I got here, and it’s a decision I need to make for myself. Its not me thinking I’m better than the team or the school I committed to. Things have changed that I’d rather not talk about, I’m looking forward to my football future.”

ACS leaves UW with a 9-12 record as a starter, and threw 3655 yards and 19 touchdown passes, as well as 758 yards rushing and 6 rushing touchdowns.

They then went on the road to New Mexico and won vs. the Lobos in a tough environment 63-53. The Cowgirls improved their record to 11-3 on the season, 2-0 in MWC play. The Pokes got off to a quick start in Fort Collins but couldn’t keep the lead against the sharpshooting Rams. The Cowboys rebounded on Saturday to steal a win from the New Mexico Lobos when Paco Cruz tipped in a ball with .04 seconds left to win the game for the Cowboys. The Cowboys won their first MWC game of the season 67-66. The Cowboys will next play at TCU on Wednesday.

In Cowboy football news the Pokes saw some shake-ups this week as they announced that David Tooley, Shamiel Gary, and Ian Watts would not return to the team next season. The Cowboys also announced that Mike Fanoga has taken a job within the athletic department and Matt Rahl will be taking his place on the coaching staff. Rahl previously was the Directory of Recruiting for the Cowboys and will now coach the outside linebackers.
