Kind of interesting twist. What if this is rejected by the student body? Could students vote or have a say in disbanding sports at their University?

This one talks about the private schools and unionization (that's a hard word).

Good article. I don't think Pandora's box is an overstatement on this.

The more I read articles like this and see the uneducated comments by people, the more astounded I get. Being immersed in the world of higher education for the majority of the last decade, I may not be privy to the general public's understanding of how college athletics works. Can someone please tell me why there is so much misinformation and confusion on this topic??? These are the biggest points that I fully understand, yet apparently the majority of the public has no clue on:

A) Division 1 football and basketball players (the only athletes that would actually benefit for pay-for-play) not only get full tuition scholarships, they also get room and board stipends that, when spent appropriately, can easily pay for room, board, and general expenses (I.E. gas, movies, beer, etc.).

B) YES, some D1 football and basketball programs do turn a profit. However, that profit is then turned around and spent on other non-profit sports. Typically, this surplus is not enough to pay for the non-profit sports and thus general funds (I.E. student fees, non-athletic subsidization, etc.) are required. As a result, VERY few athletic programs turn a profit, and the vast majority that do aren't cashing in on millions of dollars in profit.

C) The NCAA as an organization does make some decent money, but they aren't swimming in billions and billions of surplus dollars, the majority of it is turned around and used to fund administrative fees and then given to schools and conferences to help fund their athletic departments (as the movie mentions). A half billion dollar endowment wouldn't last long if it was actually paid out to all the athletes in college sports.

D) Athletes are bitching about medical expenses from injuries suffered while playing. HUH??? All athletes are required (by NCAA rule) to have insurance. As a result, the worst they will have to pay out-of-pocket is deductible and co-pay. And at most institutions this out-of-pocket expense maxes out at $1000-2000! After that, the university's (or NCAA's) secondary insurance kicks in and foots the remainder of the bill. Not to mention that the NCAA pays a lot of money every year for long-term disability insurance for athletes with disabilities suffered as a result of their sport.

E) The athletes that SHOULD be complaining are the track, tennis, golf, swimming, etc. athletes that only get partial, if any, scholarship monies. They don't get full tuition (except for a very select few). They don't get room and board or training table. They are the ones that will lose their sport and any possible scholarship monies if pay-for-play happened. We are hearing the bitching from the football and basketball players who in reality are the athletes already getting the most in return for playing.

I get it, they think that they are making the school and the NCAA some money and they want a piece of the pie...but in the grand scheme of things, there IS NO MONEY!

Sorry for the long post. But if anyone has some insight into what I'm talking about here, please help me out; because I'm at a loss as to why this has become such a polarizing issue when it is, IMO, a very one-sided debate. Lack of education??? If so, how ironic.
