Practice #20 (8/19/2014)

After redshirting last year and going through spring drills with a new coaching staff, nothing changed for Troy Boyland.

The problem is, something needed to change for the University of Wyoming redshirt junior defensive tackle.

The change came over the summer.

Boyland reported to Laramie for summer workouts in early June at 320 pounds. As UW started its third and final week of fall camp Monday, Boyland was between 285 and 290 pounds.

Does he ever stop smiling? I bet he's got that grin the whole way through the sack too. It's the last thing the QB sees before closing his eyes as his shoulders hit the turf. Eddie's a beast. Eddie Yarbeast.

MALAUULU BREAKING THROUGH?

Defensive coordinator Steve Stanard said after Saturday's practice that the staff is searching for a fifth interior defensive lineman to play, complementing defensive tackles Patrick Mertens and Troy Boyland and nose tackles Uso Olive and Chase Appleby.

Freshman defensive tackle Sidney Malauulu seems like he might be receiving a tryout for that job.

The 6-foot-3, 283-pound freshman worked in position drills alongside those other four players, and then played exclusively with those top guys in the scrimmage drills as well.

Redshirt senior Colby Kirkegaard — still the starter — threw a nice deep ball to senior receiver Dominic Rufran. Kirkegaard executed a pump fake to perfection on the play. Kirkegaard made several nice throws during the period. One was over the middle to sophomore Jake Maulhardt, and another was to the sideline for senior receiver Jalen Claiborne.

Sophomore backups Tom Thornton and Aaron Young also took some snaps at quarterback. Thornton got more than Young. All the plays during the period were pass plays.

Bohl also said freshman running back Brian Hill, cornerback Robert Priester and safety Chavez Pownell may all get an opportunity to play this season. Freshman tight end Tyree Mayfield would likely have been in that group as well, but he suffered a significant shoulder injury in Saturday's scrimmage.

https://twitter.com/mikevorel/status/501835032290267137 Wyoming freshman RB Brian Hill avoids redshirt, climbs depth chart

Brian Hill was lined up deep in his own end zone, and he was scared.

With the football ominously situated at his team's 1-yard line during Wyoming's fall scrimmage on Saturday, the 6-foot-1, 204-pound freshman was asked to take the hand off, and make it out alive.

The play call was a power run up the gut, designed to allow Hill to squeeze through hundreds of pounds of tangled, dueling humanity and reach daylight. His goal, however, wasn't a 100-yard sprint from one thin stretch of brown and gold turf to the other.

Cowboy's Brian Hill currently No. 3 on depth chart

Brian Hill felt he could play as a true freshman this season for the University of Wyoming football team.

But the 6-foot-2, 204-pound running back from Belleville, Illinois, knew it would take more than good play on the field.

“It starts with earning the upperclassmen’s respect,” Hill said. “All the upperclassmen say they like the way I run and tell me to keep running hard.”

Hill had the biggest play of last Saturday’s first and only scrimmage of fall camp. He ripped off a 47-yard run as the offense had the ball at its own 1-yard line. Hill finished with a scrimmage-best 98 yards on seven carries.

https://twitter.com/rpgagliardi/status/ ... 7519130625 UW fall camp – Day 17

Special teams took center stage during the early parts of Wyoming’s 21st practice and 17th day of fall camp Wednesday morning in cool and breezy conditions at Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium.

UW worked on things such as field-goal return, punting out of the end zone and kickoff during the portion of practice the media was allowed to watch.

One might ask about field-goal return? Remember the Alabama-Auburn game last year where Auburn returned a missed field goal for a touchdown to win the game?

SPECIAL SITUATIONS

One of those "special situations" we saw early in Wednesday's practice was the Cowboys working on what would happen if Stuart Williams missed a field goal short and the opposing team attempted to return it.

Sound familiar, Alabama?

"Many of those guys had never really been exposed to, ‘OK, if you’re kicking a field goal and all of a sudden they have a return guy back, what the heck do we do?’ I think if you call the University of Alabama up, they’ll probably want to know," Bohl said.

"We did everything from on-side kicks to taking safeties and all of those things. Those are important elements that may or may not come up in a season, but certainly in preparation in fall camp is an appropriate thing for us to do.”

Bohl really is covering all the bases and making sure not only the 1st team guys are getting good reps, but everyone else on the team too, as depth has been our bane the last several years.

https://twitter.com/rpgagliardi/status/ ... 3591047168 Bohl was asked how he felt about the depth at the two safety positions behind seniors Darren White (free) and Jesse Sampson (strong). “We are concerned about our depth there. We will continue to look at different combinations.”

Sophomore Xavier Lewis (free) and redshirt freshman Tim Kanmana (strong) were listed as backups prior to fall camp. True freshman Chavez Pownell Jr. also has put himself in the mix for possible playing time.
