https://twitter.com/mikevorel/status/506584899201953792 Wyoming's Nzeocha brothers make impact in win over Montana

Sometimes, first names matter.

In Wyoming's 17-12 victory over Montana, Nzeochas were responsible for two of the team's banner plays.

In the second quarter, the younger, skinnier brother burst through the middle of Montana's protection, extended his arms and blocked Stephen Shaw's punt with a thud, watching as freshman running back Brian Hill recovered on the Grizzly 9-yard line.

The responsible party?

Nzeocha, Eric.

https://twitter.com/mikevorel/status/506584633966727168 Notes and Quotes: Bohl's Air Force week press conference

TEAM'S ATTITUDE

Though Wyoming played far from a perfect game in its season-opening win over Montana, Bohl said he was pleased with the attitude and enthusiasm of his team.

“While we’re pleased with the win, the performance certainly can improve," Bohl said. "But the attitude was excellent. I really was pleased with our players.”

INJURY UPDATE

Bohl said Monday that redshirt sophomore running back D.J. May and senior wide receiver Jalen Claiborne did not finish Saturday's game, but both will practice Monday and be good to go against Air Force.

"We’re pleased with that. We should go into this next game against Air Force healthy,” Bohl said.

Only two things I get from Week 1 in preparation for the UW-AF game.

1- Our passing better improve or Wick and May will get stuffed
2- I appreciate what the AFA does for our country, but the chop blocks on that video piss me off. Freakin knee-wrecking, season ending injury blocks.

Did anyone see this about a week ago?

Air Force running back Devin Rushing suffered an ankle sprain in the second day of full-pads practice earlier this month when a defender grabbed his leg as another yanked his facemask. Injuries happen, and Rushing ended up missing over a week. But while Rushing was recovering, he basically wasn't considered part of the squad.

The Air Force football team, coached by Troy Calhoun, does not approve of hurt players. They're essentially treated like lepers.

Air Force coordinator Q&A: Defensive coach Steve Russ

Is it good to catch Wyoming this early while they’re working in a new offense?

I don’t think it’s good, I don’t think it’s bad, I just think this is who we’ve got to play. They’re impressive when you watch them run the offense. They’re extremely well-coached, they know exactly what they want to do system-wise, they have an identity, they’re tough, they’re physical, they’re nasty and they’re experienced. They’ve got a lot of guys back who have played a lot of football and they’re going to test you in a lot of different ways and it’s going to be a heck of a challenge. I don’t care if we play them in week 2 or week 10, they look pretty darn good to me.

You say they have an identity, what is it?

They’re going to smash you in the mouth and they’re going to run around you. So you can’t just pack your defense in and say, ‘OK, we’re not going to let you run up the middle,’ because they’ll run around you just as easily. They’ll naked you, they’ll boot you, they’ll screen you, they’ll play-action pass you and they’re efficient when they need to get into spread-you-out sets and the quarterback can run the ball well enough that you have to account to. They’re diverse, but they have an identity.

???
Capt. Kirk is no runner. He's a pocket passer. Thornton and Stratton can run the ball, but Kirk is not a dual threat.

Nulph column: No nicknames needed, just compliments for UW running back duo (WyoSports.net)

Shaun Wick and D.J. May sat side-by-side in the University of Wyoming’s War Room on Saturday following the Cowboys’ 17-12 win over Montana in taking questions from the media.

They laughed and joked around with reporters and spent more time complimenting each other than talking about their own accomplishments.

And the two running backs wouldn’t have it any other way.

Bohl, Cowboys face new challenge this week with Air Force (WyoSports.net)

A new week brings a new challenge for the University of Wyoming football team.

First-year coach Craig Bohl’s Cowboys host Air Force at 8:15 p.m. Saturday in the Mountain West opener for both teams.

UW held a formidable offense in FCS foe Montana to 253 yards and 42 yards rushing in a 17-12 home victory last Saturday. It now turns its attention to stopping Air Force’s multiple and triple option-based offense.

“What option teams have done over the last couple of years is refine and change some of their blocking schemes, which has taken the triple-option into a different level,”said Bohl during his weekly news conference Monday.

#4 (Jones) had a horrific game, and should be replaced by #14 (Finley).

Finley, in fact, was a starter last year (and the fastest DB on the team) until he went down. Wonder if he is not 100% yet, or what the deal is.

Jones looked like he forgotten everything he ever learned about football last Saturday.

Gazette.com: Air Force coordinator Q&A: Offensive coach Mike Thiessen

Now that you’ve had some time to digest the film, what stood out?

I thought we had a couple of good guys up front. I thought both of our guards played pretty good, pretty physical and got some guys on the ground, which was good to see. I thought Garrett Brown played pretty good. Obviously the tailback played pretty good. We’ve got to clean it up, though. If we’re going to be a triple-option team we’ve got to read it. We’ve got to be a little more efficient in reading it.

What do you see in Wyoming?

They’re tough, they’re big, they’re physical. They’re senior guys, so they’ve been around. They’re experienced. We’ll have to bring out A game, get some tough yards, complete some throws and play our style of ball. We are who we are.

Revised to what he really meant.

What do you see in Wyoming?

Blown out knees. Lots and lots of knees. All we see as coaches is "Which player's season do we want to ruin?" ACLs, MCLs, Meniscus, we will be going for all of them. The more people we can chop-block and end their season (hopefully career), the better.

Just realized, looked at the depth chart and MAN we are really senior laden on the defensive end, I think its 9 seniors we start! That is a lot!

I think that means if they continue to mesh we can have a special defensive group! Now lets get the offense going!

Big game this weekend, cant wait!

https://twitter.com/mikevorel/status/506884130148085760 Wyoming offensive line, Hardy aims to improve no matter what

Improve.

The word matters, even if the previous outcome doesn't as much.

Wyoming offensive line coach Scott Fuchs is certainly happy to be coming off a win, but the message to his troops is both universal and constant, regardless of the result.

Progress is the ultimate goal, and it's never permanently attainable.

“Win, lose, whatever. Improve every week," Fuchs said, when asked for an overarching message to his offensive line. "That should be our goal. If we do that every week, we should be on track.
