Three-time national championship-winning head coach Craig Bohl found himself in a very unfamiliar place in his first season at Wyoming. By Oct. 11, he had more losses with the Cowboys than in the previous three seasons at North Dakota State combined.

The dynasty Bohl left in Fargo wasn’t built overnight, however. Upon transitioning into the competitive Missouri Valley Football Conference, the Bison endured seasons of 6-5 and 3-8, before breaking through and into the FCS Playoffs in 2010.

Likewise, establishing Wyoming as a Mountain West title contender will take time. The Cowboys endured growth pains last season, dropping six of their last seven, including the final three straight to fall out of bowl eligibility. This fall’s schedule breaks down similarly, with road games at Boise State, Utah State and San Diego State all falling in late October or November. The Cowboys also see border rival Colorado State in the final month, with the lone reprieve coming in the season finale against UNLV.

With the least experienced starting roster in the Mountain West, Bohl may be facing a second season at Wyoming similar to his second campaign in the MVFC. Still, there’s enough talent and a manageable enough slate that Wyoming could break through a year ahead of schedule.
