LAS VEGAS — Look up and down the Wyoming roster and one word is a constant: freshman.

With 19 redshirts from last year, a full 2015 recruiting class and a large number of true freshman walk-ons expected when fall camp opens on Aug. 10, much of the Cowboys' roster will be inexperienced compared to the 2014 team.

However, Craig Bohl views the youth movement in Laramie as cause for enthusiasm.

“Last year was a unique year,” said Bohl, whose team went 4-8 in 2014. “We stepped into our third-string quarterback right from the get-go. We played two nationally ranked teams outside of conference, we had a senior, veteran defense, which can be good or bad. Now we’re going to be playing with a whole lot of young guys and we’re excited about that.”

During Mountain West Media Days on Wednesday at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Bohl told reporters he expects to play “a lot” of freshmen at two spots in particular: wide receiver and the defensive secondary.

In Bohl’s program culture, that’s far from ideal.

Relying on freshman WRs isn't a big deal. Murphy, Johnson, etc. all have talent. It's in the secondary that could be a major issue. Communication and experience are crucial at the S and CB spots.

Washington did something similar in 2014. Started a lot of top-rated CB and S recruits immediately, including 5-Star safety Budda Baker. They showed moments of brilliance, of what's to come...but they still finished near dead last in the nation in pass defense. They were eviscerated, even by an FCS program.

I expect some serious growing pains at that position. They'll flash good moments here and there, but it's very rare to see a unit that young succeed at a high level right away.

Great points, concur 100%.
