According to data from STATS, an average soccer player runs 7 miles per game.
So when Wyoming junior punter Ethan Wood — a two-time all-state soccer player at Liberty High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado — made football his full-time sport in 2013, it took some adjusting.
“It sucks just having to stand on the sideline,” Wood said. ‘Coming from soccer or in any sport, you leave your heart out on the field, you just compete until you can’t walk anymore; as a kicker or punter, it’s a different mentality because you’ll never be that exhausted. That doesn’t feel real good because you feel like you can always do more to help the team. In other positions, it’s not the case.”
This year, Wood may have the opportunity to expend his energy a bit more.
