On a national scale, Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson says the gap between the Power Five conferences and the Group of Five leagues is growing.

And even in the Group of Five leagues, the gap between their own teams is widening.

Full cost of attendance, which covers student-athletes’ additional day-to-day items like transportation expenses and school supplies, is playing a crucial role in the disparity.

"What happens if a Mountain West school says we can't do this? Forget it," Nevada coach Brian Polian said. "You've got no chance to compete. Not only can you not pluck a recruit away from a Power Five, you can't compete in your own conference. You might as well be in the Big Sky, and that's the harsh reality of it."
