If I were to wager a guess (and it's only just a guess), I would think that the utilities had something to do with it. They probably didn't want to start tearing up the ground and run in to the power feed for the scoreboard, so they took it down since it wasn't going to be powered anyway. The arch doesn't need power, the scoreboard does. Again, this is just speculation on my part.

Poles are there to protect the school's $4 million investment. They are working on a new cable support system for the larger, heavier netting now needed on that side, but that won't be completed until after the season. Poles weren't ideal, but necessary.

Old video board technology was obsolete and wasn't compatible with the new system. Once the Veterans Memorial is moved outside of Gate 6, more demolition will take place over there to make way for the HATC.
