Kevin's Commentary: A Historic Cowboy Game (gowyo.com)

I have talked to the seniors on this team, a very special group of men. Guys who have won more games this year than during the rest of their collective careers combined. Linebacker Lucas Wacha told me there were days when he didn’t want to go to practice as the losses multiplied earlier in his career. “It was a dark time, but I wasn’t about to hang up my cleats. I couldn’t do that to the rest of the team.” What a leader. That’s the kind of guy who passes on a successful legacy to the younger players. He’s why championships are accomplished.

Injuries piling up for Wyoming football on defense (trib.com)

"When you look at this year and years past, man, we’re fortunate," May said. "We’ve been blessed. Guys are healthy (overall), and we’ve been in some tough games, we’ve had some tough times, but we’ve been able to fight through stuff. We’ve been able to persevere.

"No one thought that the Wyoming Cowboys coming into the season would be competing for a Mountain West championship, but yet, here we are. We got who we got. God has a plan for everybody, and we’re just going to run with the guys we’ve got. We’ve got people who can step up. We’ve got depth now. We lacked that in the past. I’m confident in all my guys that they’re going to get it done."

Wyoming football to host its first December game in more than 100 years (trib.com)

“We’ll take the weather as we take it,” Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl said. “We like to think our guys are pretty acclimated to it, but football players are generally pretty tough guys, so I’m sure San Diego State, they’ll get acclimated to it, too.

“Obviously, the ball is probably going to feel a little harder to the receivers and maybe a couple jammed fingers here and there, but it’s football,” quarterback Josh Allen said. “And when you’re playing games in cold weather, that means you’re doing pretty well. That’s where all the big games take place. It’s a blessing.”

Playing all or most of the snaps not a problem (WyoSports.net)

For most of the last game-and-a-half, Cain and Ghaifan have played all of the snaps at UW’s two interior defensive line spots because they’re the only ones left.

“It’s a mindset you accept, and you go out there and play as hard as you can for as long as you can,” Cain said. “It’s challenging, but not as challenging as people think.”

“This is such a big week for our team, this entire state and our program,” Cain said. “For me, I’m going into this knowing what I have to do, and I will do it to the best of my abilities and see where the cards fall.”

Wyoming vs. San Diego State football Q&A with Kirk Kenney of the San Diego Union-Tribune (WyoSports.net)

What were your biggest takes from the game on Nov. 19, and anything in particular you will watch closely Saturday?

What impressed me more than anything was the play of Josh Allen, whose escapability allowed him to buy time and complete big passes. His legs also enabled Allen to run for some big plays. In either instance, it kept scoring drives alive for the Cowboys. He presents problems that no other quarterback has given the Aztecs this season. I will be paying particular attention to how the Aztecs try to stop him this time around. Coach Rocky Long said it's a "double-edged sword." Keep Allen in the pocket without a strong pass rush and he can beat you with the pass. Flush him out of the pocket and you risk him scrambling for a big play.

It was less than two years ago when UW defeated San Diego State in the championship game of the MW men’s basketball tournament in Las Vegas. That was the school’s first conference title in any sport as a member of the MW, which started in 1999
I also saw this on a facebook friend's post. We won basketball titles in 01 and 02.
Those were regular season titles though, not tournament championships
And this would be a regular season championship. For basketball the regular season championship is the more prestigious one/harder to achieve. And Gags said "first conference title" he didn't specify.

Behind Enemy Lines:

McGrane: Remorse has no Place in Rematch (GoAztecs.com)

Indeed, of the nation's 128 FBS teams, SDSU will be one of just 16 playing for a conference title this week.

"That's pretty unique company if you ask me, and I think our players understand that," said Long, whose team can become just the fourth at SDSU to post a 10-win season in the Division I era following last year's 11-3 finish. "There are 12 teams in this league. They all have players, they all have coaches, they all have the same number of scholarships and the budgets are fairly close. Every team in our league puts the same effort into being good. Ever player on every team wants to be really, really good. And to get into the championship game? That's very important to a whole lot of people. Maybe not to the national media, but our kids could care less."

Behind Enemy Lines:

Can SDSU do better at stopping Wyoming QB Allen? (SD Union-Tribune)

Late in the game two weeks ago in Laramie, Wyo., with their legs no doubt wobbly from more than half the contest spent on the field, and their lungs burning at 7,215 feet of altitude, San Diego State’s defenders were fried.

They needed either a breather or a lucky break, and it never came.

Josh Allen wouldn’t let that happen.

On a 15-play, six-minute drive that ended with a touchdown that would be the game-winner in Wyoming’s 35-34 victory, the Cowboys quarterback almost single-handedly broke the Aztecs’ will. And, just as critically, he basically forced SDSU’s Rocky Long to try a two-point conversion because the head coach wanted to get out of town without seeing Allen again.

Wyoming football 'in it to win it' headed into conference championship game (trib.com)

"That’s been my only goal, and it’s been what this program has been needing," said Allen, a sophomore quarterback. "It’s a huge game for us. It’s a huge game for this program, and to be in this situation, I’d be lying if I said I was surprised.

"We’ve just got a special group of guys. We’ve got a special team. We continue to fight. We have no give, and we’re going to fight until the very last whistle."

"I don’t think we’ve been here since 1996," Bohl said. "That’s a lot of water under a bridge. We’ve got one shot at this deal, so that comes down to us as coaches to maneuver this thing around to put ourselves in the best position to win it.

"We’re in it to win it. OK, great, we’re here. Let’s win it. Let’s win it."

5 Things to Watch: Aztecs at Wyoming (SD Union-Tribune)

5. The envelope, please

Won’t it be great after an exciting championship game between the teams to see Las Vegas Bowl executive director John Saccenti walk out and extend a bowl invitation to the winner?

Saccenti is expected to be on hand for the game.

But about that invitation …

The Las Vegas Bowl is expected to invite the Mountain West champion to the Dec. 17 game, but bowl officials are prohibited from revealing who that is on Saturday night.

Wyoming backup quarterback Nick Smith accepts different role this season (trib.com)

"Every time I come off the sidelines, he’s right there, telling me what he saw on the play," Allen said. "Having him, it’s been a blessing, because he’s been a great guy, and I know that if something were to happen, he’d be the next guy up. And he’d do well, because he’s been in that situation before."

"I’ve been learning something new each game," the Merritt Island, Florida, native said. "It’s definitely a different experience, but it’s so exciting to be a part of this. I’m still so happy to do what I do and be on this team and be a part and help as much as I can. So it’s still been a really good season, but definitely from a different perspective."

Wyoming’s Tanner Gentry thankful to persevere as a Cowboy (Denver Post)

“It’s been awesome — fun to win some games and see some success,” Gentry said in a phone interview this week. “Also on a personal level, I feel like I’ve done a good job being productive this year.”

“It really went by fast,” Gentry said of his college career. “Playing as a true freshman, that was a blast. Coach Bohl came in and we had a couple years of rebuilding, which was tough, but with my final year it’s really starting to pay off — all that hard work that we put in and all the tough times we had trying to rebuild the program to where Coach Bohl wanted. This year, it’s fun to reap the benefits.”

Wyoming football changed following 1996 WAC championship — and not for the better (WyoSports.net)

It was no secret Tiller and new Wyoming Athletics Director Lee Moon hadn’t seen eye-to-eye on how to run the football program. A portion of the Cowboys fan base was also sour on Tiller, a fact standout receiver Marcus Harris spoke to in the week leading up to the WAC title game.

“The man’s done all he could for Wyoming,” Harris said in a teleconference. “He got no respect around here. … He gets booed constantly everywhere he goes and he doesn’t deserve that.

“If (Moon) had offered me the same amount of money he gave (Dimel), I would have stayed at Wyoming,” Tiller said Tuesday from his Buffalo home.
