Alexander Aka Gorski, Andrew Moemeka step up in Wyoming's conference-opening win (trib.com)

"(Aka Gorski was) stepping up in the sense of being out there a little bit longer because of not having Lou and even Mo," Edwards said. "... But again, the best part about looking at the stat sheet was the balance in our scoring."

"I’ve been trying to figure out how to get (Moemeka) in there a little bit more, because of what he brings to the table with his athleticism and his ability to move his feet and finish around the rim," Edwards said. "I thought that was a good showing by him."

Behind Enemy Lines:

3 takeaways from the UNLV Rebels’ loss at Colorado State (LV Review-Journal)

It already was common knowledge the Rebels didn’t have a true point guard and that they would struggle inside against physical teams.

UNLV has been able to mask those problems at times, but now that the Rebels are into their Mountain West schedule, those defects won’t be so easy to hide. They now face more teams on their level on a regular basis.

What the UNLV Rebels said after their loss at Colorado State (LV Review-Journal)

Guard Kris Clyburn

“It was just us not communicating on defense and us not getting stops. We’ve got to get better, and I feel like we’re going to get better.”

Pack the Mack? Poor attendance taking toll on UNLV (LV Sun)

“The enthusiasm level is definitely not as high as it’s been in the past,” said Matt Peskin, a UNLV student who serves as president of The Rebellion, UNLV’s student cheering section. “The hype on campus isn’t there the way it has been in previous years. It’s definitely quieter this season, in a very noticeable way.”

More from Sin City:

Dwayne Morgan’s season in jeopardy as UNLV prepares to host Wyoming (LV Review-Journal)

WHAT TO WATCH

1. Wyoming leads the Mountain West with 40.4 rebounds per game, which could be a problem for UNLV. The Rebels were outrebounded by 10 on Wednesday at Colorado State.

2. How the Rebels defend the 3-point shot will be telling concerning how the game plays out. Wyoming leads the conference with 9.6 made 3-pointers per game.

3. The Cowboys have the edge in so many ways, but they haven't beaten UNLV in a regular-season game at the Thomas & Mack Center since 2003 and are only 1-point favorites. So the mentally tougher team should emerge victorious.

Wyoming junior guard Aka Gorski recovers from concussion (WyoSports.net)

Aka Gorski didn’t think it would be a big deal to recover from the concussion and also concentrate on finals. A part of him thought he might also be able to play through the injury.

“That’s not how it works,” he said. “I couldn’t really focus. I had problems with bright lights and also had headaches. It was harder than I thought it would be.”

Wyoming at UNLV men's basketball Q&A with Mark Anderson of the Las Vegas Review-Journal (WyoSports.net)

What are your thoughts on Saturday's game with Wyoming, and who wins?

It's going to be a tough game for UNLV, which did not play well against Colorado State. And now Wyoming is a step up in competition. Being at home certainly helps, and that might be what ultimately helps UNLV win. But if they don't improve on the Colorado State performance, it doesn't matter where the game is played.

Wyoming’s road woes continue at UNLV (WyoSports.net)

“As a staff, we have to do a better job with our guys in practice with turnovers,” first-year coach Allen Edwards said. “They’re not forced, it’s more of our guys being careless.”

“I thought UNLV’s length and running in on our guys late was effective,” Edwards said on his team’s poor perimeter shooting. “In the first half we didn’t do a good job of looking to the paint, but we had a lot of shots that were open and on-balance that just didn’t go in.”

Wyoming junior Jeremy Lieberman causes havoc on defense in loss to UNLV (trib.com)

“I just thought he played with a lot of energy,” Wyoming head coach Allen Edwards said, “and I think our task as a staff, because of the numbers, we try to figure out who’s playing well. Not only in a sense of who’s scoring the basketball, but who’s playing well for us.

“So he’s a guy that’s probably roughly around the 18- or 20-minute mark but because of his energy and how hard he was playing, I just thought he needed to be on the floor and outside of the turnovers, I thought he was really good.”

Did the team stay out west or did they come back to Laramie before they go to Fresno?

Wyoming at Fresno State men's basketball Q&A with Robert Kuwada of the Fresno Bee (WyoSports.net)

What do you see as key matchups for Wednesday's game with Wyoming, and who wins?

That’s a really good question. The Bulldogs have been able to use their length defending on the perimeter, but that doesn’t necessarily work with Wyoming. When Fresno State deployed a 6-7 Watson or a 6-5 Hopkins on Nevada guard Marcus Marshall in the second half Saturday, he went from hitting 8 of his first 12 shots to hitting only 2 of his last 9 and that was one of the keys in coming from 10 down with 11:09 to play. It should be an interesting game. If Fresno State has any carry over from its win over Nevada to add to the home floor, it should win. I’ll give it to them by … seven points.
