Practice #15 (8/15/2014)

UW's freshmen fullbacks trying to find ways to stand out (WyoSports.net)

Drew Van Maanen is the veteran — by about six months.

As the University of Wyoming football team gets into the second half of fall camp, the fullback position remains a work in progress.

Van Maanen, a redshirt freshman, is the leading candidate to start and take the majority of reps this season. However, three true freshman walk-ons are on his heels.

The fullback position is new for UW as Bohl implements his West Coast/pro-style offense. Van Maanen came out of the spring as the starter after moving from tight end.

https://twitter.com/mikevorel/status/500328368236400640 Notes and Quotes: Wyoming fall practice No. 15

Wyoming's 15th fall practice wasn't like the rest.

That's because head coach Craig Bohl and the special team players -- snapper Brendan Turelli, placekicker Stuart Williams and holder Sam Stratton -- missed practice to attend the funeral of punter Ethan Wood's parents, John and Resia Wood.

John and Resia Wood died tragically in a plane crash last Saturday.

Even without some familiar places, the Cowboys practiced Friday morning in shoulder pads and shorts. Here are a few quick observations from the proceedings.

At least Van Maanen, who is from Parker, Colorado, has responded physically. Listed at 6-foot-1, 222 pounds on UW’s roster, Bath said he is close to 240 and maintaining that weight.
Very nice to see.

Was wondering about that, as 222lbs is pretty light for a fullback. Doable, but still on the light side (though about the right size for the triple option offense).

https://twitter.com/mikevorel/status/500402649296932864 Vorel: Unfair to dismiss Kirkegaard based solely on Cal Poly loss

Colby Kirkegaard's story needs an ending.

Wyoming's redshirt senior quarterback understands that some feel capable of writing it for him. They saw one collegiate start nearly two years ago, and the final score was burned into their subconscious like a permanent, searing brand.

Cal Poly 24, Wyoming 22.

It was the most disappointing day in a particularly disappointing season, in which the Cowboys followed eight wins and a bowl berth with eight losses, including a defeat at the hands of an FCS opponent at home.

For those that don't know, Bradley was Bohl's defensive coordinator for three seasons from 2003-2005.

Okay, that's why he made it too Bohl.

Practice #17, Closed Scrimmage (8/16/2014)

Cowboys ready for today's scrimmage (WyoSports.net)

Alignments and assignments.

Players and coaches alike threw those words around liberally Friday as the University of Wyoming football team prepares for its only major scrimmage of fall camp. The closed scrimmage, which starts at 11 a.m. today at War Memorial Stadium, comes more than halfway through fall camp and exactly two weeks before Wyoming’s season opener at home against Montana on Aug. 30.

After today, the Cowboys have six fall camp practices remaining before game-week preparations begin.

“We want to get off on the snap count and have 11 guys in the huddles; first-things-first,” UW offensive coordinator Brent Vigen said. “Those are things that are controllable. We have to be able to do those.”

I've been saying it ever since he signed here: Brian Hill will be special.

Where's May?

Wick, he almost always struggles in practice, but come game time, he goes out there and puts up numbers.

Okay, good to know about May. Just playing it safe.

And sounds like an incredibly productive scrimmage, not only for the first team, but everyone else, which is what we have been needing badly.

It looks like they really don't want May and Wick to get hurt in a meaningless scrimmage. We all know what they can do. The #3 running back spot will be a battle. Although I'm guessing Stover had the tougher job running against the ones and the others ran against the twos, and threes. Still Hill and Evans numbers look good.

More than 50%, but would like to see it go up as the season progresses.
