Steve Suder Out, Jay Novacek In
WELCOME TO THE WAR, ELEVATION 7200 FEET

University of Wyoming head wrestling coach Steve Suder resigned from the Cowboy wrestling program yesterday after 19 years in the head coaches position. Suder, a mainstay with the program, coached several young athletes into the NCAA tournament, and had quite a bit of success with the program, but the program was failing, and the ship wasn't looking like it wasn't being righted. UW athletic director Tom Burman is looking for new blood to head the wrestling program. In the interim, Ben Vom Baur is heading up the program until a replacement is found. Vom Baur is a former UW wrestler. The coaching search will likely go nationwide, but the obvious choice has to be head man at Northwest College Jim Zeigler, who runs one of the best NJCAA programs in the country, has close ties with the state of Wyoming and would recruit well the athletes located in our square borders. He has won a national champion with NorthWest this decade.

With Suder on the way out another former Cowboy is in.. the Hall of Fame, that is. Former Wyoming Cowboy tight end Jay Novacek has been selected to the College Football Hall of Fame. Novacek joins former teammate Troy Aikman, former Notre Dame and South Carolina coach Lou Holtz, and running back Thurman Thomas. Novacek was part of the Dallas Cowboys dynasty of the 90's where he hauled in touchdowns in a number of Super Bowls. Novacek, a native of Martin, South Dakota, will be the 4th Wyoming alum elected into the hall joining Eddie Talboom, Bowden Wyatt, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Bobby Dodd, and former coach Bob Devaney. Congrats to Jay!

Former tight ends coach for the Wyoming Cowboys, Harvey Patton, is in a hospital in Denver recovering from a car accident from April, on his way to Fort Collins. Patton is in stable condition and is starting to regain motor functions. More information can be found on the forum.

COWBOYS HIRE TIGHT END COACH, COWGIRLS FINISH SEASON ON HIGH NOTE
WELCOME TO THE WAR, ELEVATION 7200 FEET

The Wyoming Cowboys have filled out their coaching staff for the upcoming year by filling the open seat for the tight ends coach. With the release of football coach Harvey Patton this offseason the Cowboys recruited internally to fill the position as Joe Glenn chose his son, Casey Glenn for the position. Casey, last year's director of football operations was promoted to the position. The hire shouldn't surprise Cowboy fans as Casey has been on his dad's staff for last year, and with the Oklahoma Sooners before that as a graduate assistant and with University of South Dakota as a speed and strength coach for the Coyote football team, and has aspirations of coaching himself. Casey Glenn was a linebacker for Carroll College (MT) during their 2002 national championship victory. He graduated from Carroll with a degree in sports managemet and completed his masters degree at Oklahoma in Human Relations.

The Wyoming Cowgirls basketball team has concluded their 2007/08 season, and did so in fantastic fashion. The Cowgirls made it to the big dance for the first time in school history, and did so with an 11 seed coming out of the MWC. After the Cowgirls dropped their opening round game in the Mountain West tournament they were surprised to see that they were such a high seed, but it was well deserved according to anyone in Laramie. With the 11th seed the Cowgirls drew #6 seed Pittsburgh, in the Spokane region. Their first NCAA Tournament game was played in what could have been considered the home town crowd as they played in a familiar arena, The Pit, in Albaquerque. The Cowgirls played in front of a sea of gold, as well as a sea of red as New Mexico Lobo fans turned out to throw their support towards the Mountain West's Cowgirls. The Cowgirls gave it a valient effort, in a back and forth game with the Panthers of Pitt, starting the game on a tear sinking three after three, staying out of the way of Pitt's larger inside players. Hanna Zavecz played like a veteran, leading the Cowgirls, but it wasn't enough to overcome a slow second half which seen their three point shots disappear. They lost the game 63-58. Not too shabby for a team in the Dance for the first time. Congrats Cowgirls!

COWGIRLS STILL ROLLING, POKES LOOKING BETTER
WELCOME TO THE WAR, ELEVATION 7200 FEET

The Wyoming Cowgirls basketball team is continuing their roll towards March Madness with winning ways. Despite dropping three conference games in the last month, the Cowgirls are still looking like a force to be reckoned with when March approaches. The Cowgirls look a loss this week to the TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth, then came back on Saturday and ran the Air Force Falcons into the ground, beating them 60-32 at home. The Cowgirls, 20-4 on the season, are hoping to make a bid for a top 10 seed in the NCAA tournament next month. The Cowgirls will next face San Diego State on Wednesday in San Diego.

The Wyoming Cowboys have been playing more like a team lately and are showing signs of life late this season. The Cowboys are 10-14 on the season, but are looking to build some momentum going into next season. The Cowboys, who beat TCU earlier this week at home, dropped a game to the Air Force Falcons on Saturday in Clune Arena. The Cowboys have been getting big showings from Brandon Ewing as of late, as he has been the top scorer against TCU and AFA. The Cowboys will next face San Diego State on Tuesday in Laramie.

The Wyoming Cowboy wrestlers have split their last four dual meets, and are two duals away from the regional tournament being held in Fargo, ND. The Cowboys, without star Carter Downing, are still fighting and being led by Eric Coxbill. As of late, Cole Dallaserra, a Butte, MT native, has come up big for the Cowboys and is finding his niche in the Cowboy lineup. The Cowboys took a loss to North Dakota State, then came back to beat South Dakota State a night later managed to come away with a split on that road trip. Last week the Cowboys beat Utah Valley State, but dropped a home dual to #21 Cal-State Fullerton in Laramie. The Cowboys next face Air Force next Saturday, then finish the regular season with Northern Colorado the following Tuesday at home.

The Wyoming Cowboy football team has made the news lately, as the NCAA national signing day came to a close. The Cowboys picked up in what's being said is Joe Glenn's best recruiting class, picking up a pair of quarterbacks, Dax Crum from Mesa Community College, and Adam Berry from Moorpark, CA. The Cowboys also picked up a new kicker, Austin McCoy from Winter Park, FL. Wyoming did most of their damage in Colorado, where nine of their recruits are from. One of the more exciting Cowboy recruits is WR James Caraway from Highland Park, KS. Caraway is expected to step in as a speedy long ball threat, who has blazing speed to stretch the defenses out. The lone Wyoming native in the group is Jim Downs, an OT from Glenrock.

Also making news for the Cowboy football team is Joe Glenn's releasing of tight ends coach Harvey Patton. Patton, who played for Northern Colorado, has been with Joe Glenn since he coached at UNC, then followed him to Montana, then to Wyoming. No word has been given why Patton was released. Joe Glenn was quoted as saying, "Harvey’s past contributions to our program are appreciated, and we wish him the best in his future."  The search for a new coach will begin immediately.

COWGIRLS CONTINUE ROLLING, MEN NOTCH FIRST MWC WIN
WELCOME TO THE WAR, ELEVATION 7200 FEET

The Wyoming Cowgirls locomotive just keeps on rolling down the tracks. The Cowgirls, who are now ranked #15 in the nation, are continuing to climb in the polls, as well as rolling through the Mountain West. The Cowgirls had an absolutely dominating victory over the UNLV Rebels this last week, beating them by more than 40 points. Justyna Podziemska continued pouring in the points for the Cowgirls, who is making a strong case for herself as MWC Player of the Year. The Cowgirls finished the week by beating border rival Colorado State, putting the Cowgirls in firm control of the MWC. This week, however, will not be as easy for the Cowgirls as they face the other top team in the Mountain West, Utah. The Utes are 16-3 on the season, undefeated in conference play. The last time these two teams got together it ended in an OT classic, as the Cowgirls edged the Utes by a point in Laramie.

The Wyoming Cowboys notched their first win of the MWC season by defeating the Colorado State Rams on Saturday. The Cowboys, who were led by Travis Nelson, melded together and put together a solid victory. The Cowboys have looked better as of late, but have yet to find their niche as a team. This weekend showed a lot of solidarity with the team, who seem to be coming together. The Cowboys, 1-5 in Mountain West play, look to continue their roll this week as they take on Utah on Wednesday and BYU on Saturday, which are fairly critical games for the Pokes if they want any shot at the post season.

In other Cowboy related news, the signing deadline is approaching quickly, as next week recruits will have to decide what school they will choose to enroll in. The Cowboys have put together a solid recruiting class so far, in what's being deemed around various message boards as Glenn's best class. The Cowboys have recieved a verbal from Ben Parks, a kicker from Argyle, TX who looks to fill the shoes of Billy Vinnedge. The Cowboys also have verbals from Tashaun Gipson, who is the brother of current Cowboy, Marcel. James Caraway, from Dallas, has also committed to the Pokes, he will play WR. These seem to be the highest profile of the Cowboy recruits thus far, but more details will be released next week after the official signing day.

COWGIRLS CONTINUE ROLLING, MEN DROP GAMES
WELCOME TO THE WAR, ELEVATION 7200 FEET

The Wyoming Cowgirls are continuing to roll through the basketball schedule this season by picking up three wins since returning from Christmas break. The first win came against San Francisco, in a close win vs. the Dons. The second win came at a very tough place to play, The Pit, at New Mexico where the Cowgirls came through with a 58-52 win against the hosting Lobos. The latest win came against TCU, where the Cowgirls thoroughly dominated the Horned Frogs, 62-45, running their record to 14-1, 2-0 in Mountain West play. The Cowgirls matchup this week with Air Force and San Diego State, hoping to raise their current ranking from #21.

The Wyoming Cowboy basketball team suffered a couple of bad losses this week, dropping to New Mexico 99-92, in front of the home crowd after being up by 16 points at half time. The team felt they were the better team on the floor, but their performance didn't suggest otherwise by letting a big lead slip away. Coach Heath Schroyer benched Brad Jones after getting a technical foul, a move suggesting that the street ball ways of Steve McClain are gone and there will be some discipline on this basketball team. The Cowboys dropped another game to TCU, 62-45, dropping the Cowboys to 6-8 on the season, and 0-2 in conference play.

The Wyoming Cowboy wrestlers competed in the Lone Star Duals this week, facing Eastern Michigan, New Mexico Highlands, Columbia, and Nebraska-Kearney. The Cowboys only win of the week was against New Mexico Highlands. Junior Eric Coxbill put on a show for the Lone Star State by going 4-0 in competition, including a pin and a major decision. Also having success for the Cowboys were Cole Dallaserra, going 2-0 and Carter Downing, also going 2-0. Cory VomBaur went 3-1 on the weekend. The young Cowboys are showing their meddle, and look to place a few wrestlers into the national tournament this year.

In recruiting news, the Cowboys have gotten a verbal from Mesa CC quarterback Dax Crum, upping the number of QBs on the roster to 5. Recruit linebacker Brad Marboe, from Idaho Falls, backed out of his verbal with the Cowboys saying that he wanted to play at Idaho instead where his family members had great success in the 70's. Marboe wanted to stay closer to home and continue the family legacy of Idaho football. With about three weeks left in the recruiting the Cowboys are likely targeting defensive players to fill the rest of the available scholarships.
