Interesting tidbit from Blind Side book

According to the book, Michael Oher's mom lived in a area overridden with gangs in Memphis. The leader of a gang called the Gangster Disciples was a guy named Delvin Lane. The book says that Lane was a star quarterback at Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis and accepted a scholarship to play at the University of Wyoming during the early 90s. However, he was jailed because of an aggravated assault charge and never made it to Laramie. Evidently, upon his release he began his gang career.

Sad, If only he could have gotten out of that are and changed his life. I know that exact area of Memphis and they changed the name of it in the movie. It's called "Orange Mound" and has been refereed to in many rap songs. Our high school had to play Booker T High School in the playoffs; we had to be police escorted in and out of that area. Everytime I have been to Memphis, my car is broken into. It can be a scary place

Delvin has turned his life around, as he now work's with Street Ministries in Memphis and Booker T Washinton HS kids.

That is correct, Delvin has turned his life around. According to the book it is extremely hard to leave the gangs in Memphis, especially someone with as high a position in the gang as Delvin. Usually a leader who leaves the gang pays for it with his life.

You guys should watch Gangland on the History Channel. WOW! It's extreme!!!

That show also does episodes on bkier gangs. Hell's Angels sure P.O.ed a lot of other gangs!!!!!

I got to serve on a jury about 6 months ago that sent the top shot caller for the biggest Mexican gang in Colorado Springs to ass pound prison. Oh joy.
