Given that Wyoming has been a founding member of two conferences, I suggest there's another way- recruit other (preferably high-achieving) G5 programs, and, perhaps some FCS programs, and preemptively spilt from the NCAA and P5 FBS. Use an FCS playoff model as your cornerstone, create an oversight organization with real teeth, push TV and donor money into a clearinghouse model, make leaving for a P5 a one-way valve while marketing to P5 players...

It's a big project, not guaranteed to succeed, but, long-term, it's probably the best shot the G5's (and maybe some of the doormat P5s) have a football future. There is strength in numbers, and the G5 (+) holds that advantage.
Splitting from the NCAA would be really stupid. Football is a very small piece. The money we get for the basketball tournament dwarfs the football money.
The football program generates 10x what basketball does

was going to say...basketball out-earning football doesn't sound right.

For one thing, Football out-earns basketball by a lot. Secondly, the NCAA is a house of cards. If a third of it's members threatened to leave, it would collapse. There hasn't been a better time to possibly replace it. The schools ARE the NCAA. Wthout them, there is no NCAA.

I think it far more likely that the P5 schools leave the NCAA . They have the TV deals which is where the money is and would like to keep it for themselves.

I'm assuming what WYO1016 was referring to was that in general, men's basketball gets more money from the NCAA than football does. This is because of the NCAA tournament TV deal. This is likely a true statement. In 2020, UW received ~$900,000 for FB media right and ~$225,000 for MBB media rights. They also received just over $1 million from the NCAA in non-sport specific NCAA distribution. The majority of this (if not the whole thing) is likely Wyoming's slice of the NCAA tournament TV deal.

So, MBB likely gets more from the NCAA than FB.

Having said that, obviously Football brings in more overall revenue than Men's Basketball.
2020 FB Revenue: $11.3 million
2020 MBB Revenue: $2.2 million (not counting the $1 million from NCAA)

Interestingly enough, BOTH programs had expenses exceeding revenues by a significant margin.
2020 FB Expenses: $12.3 million
2020 MBB Expenses: $3.5 million

And I believe enrollment at the University is declining. So football and basketball have expenses exceeding revenues, we can assume the other sports are much more of a drain too.

Kinda shoots holes in the whole sports generating revenue for UW argument unless I’m missing something. Perhaps CJC donations make up for part of that. I’d be interested to see how the numbers shake out with those donations included.

Correct, but not to the level(s) of 2018 - 2019 (thanks Covid and you libtards). Hopefully it returns and then some in the coming years.

It still makes sense to keep these programs. They generate a tremendous amount of publicity for the University, not to mention the excitement of having competitive D1 programs in a state where there are no other major sports at the college or pro level. There are a lot schools that are far deeper in the red with their athletic budgets. It sounds like we are doing fine.

Thanks for the correction. It appears it’s up this year simply because it was down for several years.

We are below the national average in retaining freshmen though. They have a program to help that. Hopefully it works

I see that Alvester Alexander, I mean Brett Smith, I mean Titus declared for the draft.

Best wishes to him, but man, sure seems like a mistake.

Yeah, udfa maybe.

Before or starts, I hate Bohl's offense but one thing is apparent, he can get rbs. As I thought more about it, serviceable rbs in the pros are almost a dime a dozen which doesn't bode well for Titus.

For Bohl, maybe this offense is the only type of offense for the players he can get. QBs and receivers have mostly been subpar except for an obvious few. That can't all be scheme and coaching. The head scratcher is why Bohl isn't accepting applications for o-line rather than recruiting.

I saw on the twitterverse that Cobbs has a bunch of P5 offers. I had to laugh...that guy has stone fingers. Somebody is going to regret that offer...
