https://twitter.com/mikevorel/status/498583813799161856 Wyoming QB Colby Kirkegaard makes unlikely ascent on depth chart

LARAMIE — The math weighed on Colby Kirkegaard like a 2-ton anvil.

Entering his senior season at Wyoming last year, there wasn't a drop of daylight on the team's quarterback depth chart. Brett Smith began the season as one of the Mountain West's most highly touted players, and Jason Thompson was Smith's talented backup.

Playing time for anyone else at the position was a pipe dream.

"A lot of times I came home and said: 'What am I doing here? I should just quit,' " Kirkegaard said. "That's the obvious answer. You're going to be the senior quarterback on scout team. It hurts your pride."

https://twitter.com/rpgagliardi/status/ ... 6413580288 QB Stratton relishes challenge to help Cowboys in other ways

LARAMIE -- Sam Stratton is a lot of things for the University of Wyoming football team.

He's one of the most popular and well-liked guys.

He's one of the most energetic and enthusiastic. Whether it is joking around with teammates, encouraging them, singing during warm-ups or even talking with media or fans prior to practice, one can't help but be uplifted by Stratton's spirit and attitude.

He's passionate about the chance to simply be on the field after two separate knee injuries prevented him from playing in 2010 and 2012.

He's also passionate about his teammates. When senior receiver Jalen Claiborne had one of his high school friends die in an automobile accident earlier this summer, he wanted to switch his jersey number from one to nine to honor him.

Welcome to Week 2.

Wyoming had its ninth fall practice on Monday morning, splitting time between the Indoor Practice Facility and Jonah Field in shoulder pads and shorts. They will go through their second practice of the day at 3:50 p.m.

Here are a few observations from the media's 30-minute access window.

Sounds like Kirk is going to be a pleasant surprise. Love Vorel's comment on the 50 yarder to Gentry...

I've got full confidence in Kirk these days. Coach Bohl seems to, so I will as well. The offensive line, on the other hand...

https://twitter.com/rpgagliardi/status/ ... 8094034944 UW fall camp – Day 8

Monday marked the eighth day of fall camp for Wyoming, and it will practice twice today.

But there was some sad news as sophomore punter Ethan Wood will be away from the team for a while as he deals with a family emergency. That prompted the return of senior kicker Stuart Williams to camp. Williams was not part of the first week of camp and the 105-man roster so first-year coach Craig Bohl and his staff could look at other guys.

Williams is the only punter and kicker available in camp right now. Junior Justin Martin, Williams’ backup at kicker, is out with a sprained ankle.

This is what you call cowboy tough. Ruptured Bursa sac, and a stepped on foot and still hasn't missed a practice!

bursa can be an ongoing problem! Make sure he never lets it sit with fluid in it or looking at infection/tissue damage!

What's up with Trent Sewell? He was one of the highest rated receivers we have gotten. Glad to see Tanner Simpson moving up the depth chart! But theoretically Trent should be ahead of him....but he's never mentioned, whereas Tanner is all the time.

Trent is doing better this year, he put on a ton of muscle in the off season but he has just not ever rebounded from being sick two years ago. (or whenever it was) I think part of what is plaguing him is his work ethic. Whereas the Simpson kid works his ass off.

https://twitter.com/mikevorel/status/498980387494715392 Wyoming football seniors determined to help build championship foundation

Dominic Rufran can see it now.

A few years down the road, the former Cowboy wide receiver will be chatting with an acquaintance, when they'll inevitably ask where he played his college football.

"Let’s say they win the national championship or something. I’ll be able to say, ‘I went to the University of Wyoming,’" Rufran said with a wide grin on Monday, his 21st birthday.

"People will know they’re really good. To be a part of something special like that, the window is there. It’s pretty cool.”

Rufran, as well as the team's 23 other seniors, represent the foundation.

“Just to be the first team that Coach Bohl had up here, it’s an honor," [Burns] said. "I know he’s going to do amazing things. Hopefully he can win championships and we can start getting our name out there, and I can come back and be on the sidelines cheering them on when we have a couple championships under our belt.”

https://twitter.com/mikevorel/status/499232148109279233 Notes and Quotes: Wyoming fall practice No. 11

Rest is for the weak.

The Wyoming Cowboys have officially been in fall camp for nine days, and they've had at least one practice on each of them. That didn't change on Tuesday morning, as Craig Bohl's team utilized both the Indoor Practice Facility and Jonah Field for a full pads session.

Here are a few observations from the media's 30-minute access window.
