Top spenders in millions for football in 2019...
csu 25 (stadium might be part of that?)
BSU 19.5

HI 13
Rest are ballpark of 10

Coaches salaries in football
FSU 6.2
WYO 5.2
BSU 5
csu 5
usu 4.2
SDSU 3.9
Rest are ballpark 2.5-3 (HI not reporting in 2019)

Nice! thanks for putting those numbers out there!

Here are some more numbers about results. I just did this quickly so please point out if I made a mistake. My methodology was to consider a program properly paid if their performance was within one ranking of actual ranked winning percentage. This is a list of MWC teams ranked in order of conference game winning percentage for the years 2015 through 2020 along with thier 2019 spending rank (I ranked the 10 Million teams as 8th):

Win% Team Spending rank
0.826 BSU 2
0.717 SDSU 4
0.614 AFA 8
0.522 USU 6
0.521 NEV 8
0.500 WYO 5
0.477 CSU 1
0.432 FRES 3
0.396 HAW 7
0.383 SJSU 8
0.319 UNM 8
0.283 UNLV 8

Wyoming, SJSU, UNM, UNLV, and BSU perform about what you would expect based on spending.

CSU, Fresno, and Hawaii perform worse than expected.

SDSU, AFA, USU, and NEV all perform better than what their spending would predict.

Coaches salary (The bottom 6 are all ranked 7th):

0.826 BSU 3
0.717 SDSU 6
0.614 AFA 7
0.522 USU 5
0.521 NEV 7
0.500 WYO 2
0.477 CSU 3
0.432 FRES 1
0.396 HAW 7
0.383 SJSU 7
0.319 UNM 7
0.283 UNLV 7

USU, Haw, SJSU, UNM, UNLV are getting approximately what they are paying for.

BSU, WYO, Fresno, and CSU are Overpaying.

AFA, NEV, and SDSU are getting more wins than they paid for.

Kind of reveals what we already knew I suppose. It is interesting that AFA, NEV, and SDSU are getting bargains in both overall spending and coach's salary. Fresno and CSU are not getting a good deal in either category. I don't see anything compelling here except Bohl is under-performing his salary. Is that salary number a part of the overall spending number or are they separate? These are pretty flat distributions as well...the top team spends roughly double the bottom teams in both categories. The middle in both categories is much closer to the bottom.

Definitely interesting to look at it that way. Hopefully the nevada guy doesn't overachieve with his budget at csu.

I usually exclude AF because they are a unique situation. I'm also sure there are a lot of other complex factors like cost of living adjustments. I'll bet Bohl's salary looks even better than say the California coaches. I also assume there are cost of operating differences between universities. Our 16 mill football budget might be equivalent of 18 or something in another state.

Regardless, it is pretty clear Bohl and company are underperforming for their salaries. It's also clear the substantial increases in football budgets aren't paying off (records from 2014-now). Perhaps if a coaching change is made, at some point, the coaching salaries should be reduced by 1-2 million (down to sdsu/usu levels) and that money go to bball salaries.

On a separate note, I found an article with AD salaries and Burman is the lowest paid in the MWC and among the lowest paid in the country. I wonder if that's true?

From Nevadasports.net for 2022:

1. Colorado State's Jay Norvell, $1.6 million

2. Wyoming's Craig Bohl, $1.6 million

3. UNLV's Marcus Arroyo, $1.55 million

4t. Fresno State's Jeff Tedford, $1.5 million

4t. San Jose State's Brent Brennan, $1.5 million

6. Boise State's Andy Avalos, $1.475 million

7. San Diego State's Brady Hoke, $1.1 million

8. Utah State's Blake Anderson, $1.025 million

9. Nevada's Ken Wilson, $950,000

10. Hawaii's Todd Graham, $800,000

11. New Mexico's Danny Gonzales, $700,000

The MW coach salary is a lot flatter than I thought...less than 200k seperates the top 6...and of the top six..only BSU is having much success. I just don't see a world where paying coaches top dollar leads to wins. Maybe good coaches will eventually get top pay but not the other way around.

Serious question... Not trying to inflame... At what level of compensation would you be happy with Bohl's MW results?

If he's going to go 2-6 then 700k would be appropriate.

Ok...I tend to agree that it would be "appropriate". Would we still be calling for a change at HC if he where making 700K? Set aside "appropriate"...are we "happy" with those results as long as we are not paying much?

None.

But we have had four non losing seasons in a row and I sure as hell wouldn't trade anything for that. Now I agree with the concept of needing a different offensive coordinator, however I am not an advocate for the hatred Bohl is receiving. Now if you all want one 10 win season with a title, but then follow it with more mediocre teams and losing records fine, but if you haven't noticed we are so close it's ridiculous. We're right there. We have depth and playmakers. If we haven't reached the top in 2-3 more years then yes I would be gunning for Bohls head too, but we're so close it's stupid to think anyone could have done what he has. A change at O-coordinator is needed then see what happens
What do you think now, 2 years later, after a change in O-coordinator?

But damn, he made some bold promises, we ponied up financially, and he's failed to deliver. I'm pretty salty about it, and I think all Wyoming fans and taxpayers should be as well.
The fossil fuel extractors are the tax payers in Wyoming, and they're probably okay with how UW athletics are going.
